Artist book aa - to be pronounced as if the doctor asks you to open your mouth - was published by RETOUR. In aa we see a tale of objects and drawings whose main occupation is to search for the meaning of life. The book knows seven chapters, each representing a different state of being. Every chapter starts with a picture of a sculpture as the chapter title. The sculptures are - each in their own way - a call to the drawings to remain alert for physical reality. A warning to the drawn figures not to get lost in dream images. In this way the book is a conversation between drawn ideas and sculpted material. The chapters are divided in seven different booklets, opening the possibility of changing the reading order.

The book was produced in an edition of hundred, with hand-bound silkscreen covers. The books are available for purchase via RETOUR at €35.

In installation aa, the sculptures hop between different states of being. From a mysterious gift - via a hand studying the vibrations of atoms - to the transparency of a bigger picture. A hopscotch of colored sand with lines of pulverized pavement chalk serves as a pedestal for the sculptures of the book. The hopscotch game represents hopping between states of being. You can skip and return. Because of the sand, the hopscotch is fragile. It slips between your fingers and yet is tangible. If you were to jump on it, the shape shifts. Moving from frustration to ecstasy is no child’s play.

At Convent in Ghent, the book presentation of publication aa was supported by group exhibition pas a pas. With the exhibition, we wanted to approach the exhibition space as a form of publication and reflect on the relationship between book, installation and drawing as media.

The exhibition was made
possible with the support of Culture Ghent and the city of Ghent,
in collaboration with Clara Borg Verbeke, Judith Herman and Hanne Geerinckx,
with the generous help of Wouter De Vleeschouwer.
