Bio

Lieselotte Vloeberghs (b. 1994, Belgium) holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from LUCA School of Arts in Ghent. Her work received the Friends of S.M.A.K. Award, and she has completed residencies at Komplot in Brussels and Galerija 101 in Kaunas. She has participated in exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, and currently works from her studio at Cas-co in Leuven.

Vloeberghs’ work departs from belief systems that generate meaning and shape reality. Convictions drawn from religion, ritual, myth, science, and other frameworks find their way into drawings, sculptures, and installations.

Abstract theories are explored through tangible figures—figures that navigate diverse systems of thought and chart various notions of truth. They act on a crisis of meaning. Taken together, Lieselotte’s drawings form a kind of visual encyclopedia of realities.

In their choice of materials, Lieselotte tends toward natural sources and practices of self-sufficiency. Gathering and harvesting materials that are already present—and embracing the slowness this entails—creates space for meaningful encounters with the surroundings and reveals the physical, spiritual, and political significance of matter. They are living elements that participate in the making process.

The raw materials offer physical grounding to the ethereal ideas they depict, bring balance to their beauty, absurdity, and behave just as changeable as human beliefs in time.
